MTN Launches ReadySet Renewable Energy System in Uganda.

February 9, 2012

MTN, Uganda’s leading mobile network operator, has launched the ReadySet, a portable solar energy system that will have a significant impact on the lives of Ugandans living off-grid or without regular access to electricity.  Distributed exclusively by MTN in Uganda, the ReadySet provides an entrepreneur with the opportunity to earn up to 100,000 UGX ($40 USD) from running a phone charging business.

Designed in California by Fenix International, the ReadySet is a multifunctional energy system that can charge mobile phones as well as power lights, radios, tablets, and other devices.  The ReadySet battery draws its energy from a 15-watt solar panel and offers a mains adapter for when the sun is not shining.

MTN began piloting the ReadySet in 2009 as a way to improve energy and telecommunications access for Ugandans who lack reliable electricity.  “We worked closely with MTN to develop an energy solution to enable users to run a phone charging business as well as power lights to extend business hours,” says Fenix International’s CEO Mike Lin.

While the ReadySet may prove an attractive backup energy solution for urban dwellers, the product is targeted for business.  The device can charge up to 10 phones from a full ReadySet battery.  At rates of 500 to 1,000 UGX ($0.20-0.40) per charge, MTN’s research has shown that entrepreneurs can earn up to 100,000 UGX per month and save an additional 15,000 UGX ($6) from not needing to buy paraffin or kerosene for lighting.

The ReadySet Solar Kit includes a solar panel, mains adapter, two mobile phone chargers, and a light.  The ReadySet itself features 2 USB ports, 2 Car Lighter Adapter ports, and a display to show energy levels and recharge status.  The ReadySet retails for 370,000 UGX ($150) and is currently available at MTN Service Centers and Dealer Shops.
