In off-grid households around the world, life slows to a halt when the sun goes down. Families rely on flickering kerosene lamps or candles, and travel long distances to the nearest village to charge phones or get critical information from TV or radio. Fenix’s Fenix Power connects off-grid customers to bright lights, phone charging, and additional appliances such as radios and TVs. Ultra-efficient lights, up to ten times brighter than kerosene lamps, allow families to illuminate their homes, children to study after dark, and businesses to remain open later at night. Fenix is constantly seeking ways to help people do more and improve their lives.

Safer Homes

Switching from kerosene to solar-powered lighting reduces indoor air pollution. This benefits all members of a household, but the most notable positive effect is on women and girls, who spend more time indoors at work on household chores. Kerosene lamps are a frequent cause of devastating fires, and kerosene ingestion is a leading cause of childhood poisoning in emerging markets. Displacing kerosene lamps with LED lights makes homes safer by reducing these risks, and our surveys indicate customers displace 2 kerosene lamps on average when they purchase a Fenix Power System.

Fenix works to ensure that off-grid households and businesses, with a wide range of incomes, can effectively use a range of appropriate financial services to improve their lives. Over 70% of our customers do not have a bank account when they sign their Fenix Power agreement, which limits their access to consumer loans and financial products. To help the 80% of our customers with seasonal incomes, such as farmers and small businesses owners, we offer flexible repayment timelines.
