In 2018, Fenix joined forces with ENGIE, one of the world’s largest energy companies, in the first-ever acquisition in the off-grid PAYGo solar sector. As a leader in the global energy revolution, ENGIE is driving the transition to renewable, decentralized, and digital energy. Fenix now benefits from ENGIE’s long-term financial support, deep expertise in energy and scaling operations, well-developed supply chain, and talented team. With ENGIE, Fenix continues to focus on innovation, smart iterative design, strong team culture, and exceptional customer experience.
We’ve pioneered a win-win partnership with MTN, Africa’s largest telecom, to sell Fenix Power across Uganda, Zambia, and Benin. Fenix and MTN co-brand and co-market Fenix solar home systems, increasing trust in new solar technology and driving adoption. With Fenix, customers are able to keep their phones charged, increasing airtime usage. They repay their loans via micro-installments processed through MTN’s Mobile Money platform, furthering mobile money penetration in hard-to-reach rural markets.
Through our partnership, we access MTN’s unparalleled distribution network. MTN shops securely hold Fenix stock, and our one thousand sale reps travel out from 100 points of sale across the country. With both a shop-based and mobile salesforce, we’re able to reach rural, underserved households with clean energy.
Fenix is an awardee of Scaling Off-Grid Energy: A Grand Challenge for Development. Scaling Off-Grid Energy is a global partnership founded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, Power Africa, the U.K. Department for International Development’s Energy Africa campaign, and the Shell Foundation – a UK-registered charity. The Grand Challenge for Development aims to extend energy access to 20 million households across sub-Saharan Africa through off-grid household solar solutions.
Fenix is an awardee of the Beyond Grid Fund for Zambia, an initiative of the Government of Sweden, together with Power Africa and in cooperation with Zambian partners, to rapidly scale-up energy access and energy service markets in Zambia, with the goal of bringing modern energy services to one million Zambians by 2021. The Fund is managed by REEEP, the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership.
Fenix Nigeria is supported with UK Aid from the UK government provided through the Solar Nigeria Programme, which is implemented by Adam Smith International.
